Exodus: God Convincing Humanity Who He Is

I’m reading through the book of Exodus and I am struck by how many self-revelations of God are in this book, as well as how hard He has to hammer the point to get it across. It’s strange to think that there was a point in time where people didn’t take this stuff for granted. For instance, if I walked up to you right now and said, “God is Yahweh,” you would reply, “Yeah, that’s right… and your point is…?”

However, when God told that to Moses, it was news. Big news. “I am the LORD [Yahweh]. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by My name LORD [Yahweh] I was not known to them” (Ex. 6:2). Do we realize how earth-shattering this is? God was revealing His name to Moses… a name nobody knew existed. Talk about getting your theology rattled.

But God had been working on getting the point through to Moses long before that. Read the rest of this entry »

Ark! Ark! Ark!

Great. First she drops off the face of the earth for two weeks, now she comes back talking like a seal.

Okay, so let me introduce this post with three points:

1) Schedule-wise, this has been one of my most insane months ever. I apologize for the lack of posting (which, for the record, I was about to call “postage”. Then I realized that meant something else).

2) I will finish writing my thoughts on my previous post (yes, I have in fact started). Hopefully that will be done soon.

3) “Ark”, although it is an effective seal noise, actually means something else in this context. I invite you to read on. Read the rest of this entry »

One More Reason to Care About the Poor

Last night I got to drop in on the FSM class Q&A that goes along with the Saturday night EGS. Normally I am unavailable at that time, but this week I was actually able to go. Because I’m a teaching assistant for the Friday night class, I get to drop in on the Saturday session whenever I’m available. It’s a great time of learning; the students write down questions about the book of Revelation and the End Times to be answered by the class facilitators (who I will come to in a minute).

Anyway, I was in the class, and one student submitted a question that went something like this: “What about the poor and totally oppressed people in the earth who haven’t heard about Jesus? Will they be spared the judgments, or will they perish?” Read the rest of this entry »

Word of Life Meeting 14

So if you’re keeping track with the meeting numbers, obviously I’ve skipped a few weeks. But by the grace of God, we’re back on track now…

The last couple of times we met, we discussed chapter 9, which covers Jesus’ offices. The offices of Christ might also be called something like “job descriptions” or “functions”; they show the unique ways in which Jesus is qualified and equipped to do what He does. These have been set into three basic categories: Prophet, Priest, and King.

Daniel 2(b) – God, the Revealer of Secrets

Our Word of Life study got bumped back another week, so in the meantime, I thought I’d put in another post on Daniel. We looked a little bit last time at the circumstances and setup of the dream, and in the rest of the chapter, we find out more about the dream itself. Read the rest of this entry »

Daniel 2(a) – God Raises Up and Removes Kings

I’ve not been as regularly blogging as I would like lately… and it’s almost a guarantee that over the next four days of the onething conference, I’m not apt to do much writing then. It seems like a good time to chip in another chapter of Daniel before things get crazy. 🙂
