Best. Sermon. EVER.

I’m working on a post on Genesis 1-3 right now, to continue the series on exegesis of passages pertaining to women’s role in ministry. Hopefully that will be out in a day or two.

In the meantime, I want to highlight what is perhaps the clearest, most inspiring, all-around gripping sermon on night and day prayer I have ever heard. I’ve heard a lot of them in the past seven years. All of them have been really, really good. And I’m not exaggerating about this one.

Stephen Venable rocked FCF this Sunday with his message. Download the mp3 by clicking here. Get the notes (Word Document) by clicking here. Or go directly to IHOP-KC’s website and watch the video archive here. I was at the 6:00pm service. It rocked.

Go. Listen. Watch. Read. Get inspired to pray and worship more. And then do it more.

Tidbit: Misery Loves Company

Lately, I’ve been feeling the weight of a particular revelation. It’s not particularly long, but it’s worth a good selah or two. Since it’s my blog, I get to bring you lovely folks along with me on the ride (hence the title).

Recently, Mike Bickle spoke about how King David responded to mistreatment. (You can read about it here and/or download it here to listen to it). One of the big points he drove home was how it is unwise and unproductive to seek your own justice. We see this in the life of David when he refused to strike out in vengeance against Saul. David spared the man who was wrongfully seeking to kill him, saying “Let the LORD judge between you and me, and let the LORD avenge me on you. But my hand shall not be against you” (1Sam 24:12). Rather than seeking to clear our own name or fight our enemies ourselves, we need to hand the situation over to the Lord.

I could feel the weight of the message while I was listening. It was good. It was scriptural. I found it enjoyable and provoking. But in all honesty, I was listening from a slightly detached perspective. Read the rest of this entry »

Corey Russell Tells It Like It Is

It has been far too long since I’ve heard Corey Russell preach. Well, not any more. He spoke at FCF tonight and it was brilliant. Go listen to it. It’s actually a lot along the lines of what I posted yesterday, but because it’s a full sermon and not a short blog post, it’s a lot more thorough. Plus it was delivered by the one and only Corey Russell. It definitely deserves a listen.

A couple of noteworthy quotes that made me really happy:

[On the subject of fellowshipping with the Holy Spirit] “We’ve got a billion dollars in our belly… and we’re living on twenty cents a day.”

[On the subject of struggling for righteousness in our own strength] “We’re trying to wield a William Wallace sword with a Minnie Mouse spirit.”

Go download it from the IHOP MP3 store… it will probably be a day or two until it’s up, but it’s worth waiting for.

Overcoming Loneliness

Okay. Can I just say that Stuart Greaves kicked my tail in FCF this Sunday. Perhaps that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but I definitely had a couple moments of feeling like he was preaching the sermon straight at me. The rest of the room just thought it was a general message. Except that, come to think of it, what I just said is part of the problem he addressed. “Overcoming loneliness.”

Loneliness is something I’ve struggled with off and on throughout my life. Sometimes I couldn’t help it (like the years-long stretch of my childhood where — long story — I literally had no friends). Sometimes I definitely could have helped it, but didn’t (like the years I spent being too blasted timid to speak to anyone). Lately, it’s been more of a nuisance than a real-deal slump. I’ve had semi-regular bouts with it, but it hasn’t been totally messing up my life like it used to.

But since God seems to be in the mood of bringing a lot of my emotional junk up to the surface lately, the timing on this sermon couldn’t have been more priceless. Read the rest of this entry »
