And Today’s Special is: Humble Pie

At first, I was amazed and annoyed that so many of my pet peeves would be set off by so many people in such a short span of time.

Then I realized I probably should be amazed and repentant that I had so many pet peeves to be set off in the first place.

Irony, thy name is cheap advertising…

They even had the courtesy to do the red underline themselves this time.

Um, thanks for the heads up.

King David did not write Hakuna Matata

I think I have topped myself for the most glaringly obvious, yet oddly random title to surface on this blog. Allow me to elaborate on what I mean by that title.

Friday night I was prayer leading my team’s Worship with the Word, and we were singing through Psalm 37. I was struck by a few verses while reading through the passage.

(Psalms 37:7-8) Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret — it only causes harm.

So we have the exhortation: Don’t worry. Be at rest. Do we understand what that means? Do we even know how to stop worrying and be at rest? Continue reading ‘King David did not write Hakuna Matata’

Rambling thoughts on Creationism and Evolutionism

The scientific community has been in a bit of an uproar over a British biologist named Michael Reiss who wrote an article a few days ago stating that he thinks biology teachers need to be willing to address the issue of creationism in their classes. Many evolutionary biologists were greatly dismayed at the prospect and are calling for him to be removed from the Royal Society, saying it was absurd for him to advocate teaching creationism alongside evolution.

The funny thing is that it’s not actually what he was saying. Continue reading ‘Rambling thoughts on Creationism and Evolutionism’

One More Reason to Care About the Poor

Last night I got to drop in on the FSM class Q&A that goes along with the Saturday night EGS. Normally I am unavailable at that time, but this week I was actually able to go. Because I’m a teaching assistant for the Friday night class, I get to drop in on the Saturday session whenever I’m available. It’s a great time of learning; the students write down questions about the book of Revelation and the End Times to be answered by the class facilitators (who I will come to in a minute).

Anyway, I was in the class, and one student submitted a question that went something like this: “What about the poor and totally oppressed people in the earth who haven’t heard about Jesus? Will they be spared the judgments, or will they perish?” Continue reading ‘One More Reason to Care About the Poor’

Tip for shady advertisers: research.

Even a quick Google search would have helped out with this one. I must share with you this ad which confronted me from the sidebar today… the only thing I have altered about it is a little red line to help identify the problem spot.

“Hey Joe, I need to finish this ad. What’s the name of that book again?”

“I think it was something like…”

"Yeah, that sounds about right."

"Yeah, that sounds about right."

Sin, pleasure, and really ugly shoes

I saw an ad on the Internet the other day that was promoting some website that sells shoes. There it was in the sidebar, in all its tacky marketing glory. A pair of platform heels was featured in the picture, with this caption beneath: “Sinfully Unique.”

I had to do a double-take to be sure I read it correctly.

Um. When did uniqueness become a sin? I’m pretty sure “Thou shalt be bland and indistinguishable from thy neighbor” is nowhere in the Ten Commandments. Leaving aside the fact that the shoes were hideous, which might persuade me to say that there was something fundamentally wrong with them, “sinfully unique” is a laughably confusing description.  Continue reading ‘Sin, pleasure, and really ugly shoes’
